When President Trump held a White House prayer breakfast on Thursday morning, Mr. Trump telegraphed his interest in running for president again.
“I cannot believe how nice it was,” Mr. Trump said. “I even got a call from Nancy Pelosi, who I have never spoken to before.”
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, mentioned in an interview with NBC News that the president would receive a call from her. The two were not well acquainted at all.
Mr. Trump’s comments were preceded by an hour-long address from Mr. Trump in which he continued to discuss his “wall” and struck at Democrats who have said they would not fund the border wall.
He also seemed to tout his three-week White House visit to his Mar-a-Lago retreat in Florida and to declare that he was not necessarily distracted by the presidential race.
“As you know, I had the absolute right to skip this occasion and go to Florida,” he said. “But I felt loyalty to the country.”
Mr. Trump reportedly did not receive any congressional support during his Mar-a-Lago trip, when he was photographed with wine glasses in hand, a cardinal sin among political insiders. Mr. Trump reportedly also raised the possibility of campaign rallies for 2020.
“I have to say,” he said, “I’m thinking of running.”
With that, Mr. Trump left the White House for a family trip, saying he had to give up “executive time” to work on the government.
“We’re very concerned,” Mr. Trump said, citing the state of America’s economy. “We’re going to do something about that. Very important to get that changed in the not-too-distant future.”
