Suzuka GP: Mark Lowton and Jacques Villeneuve talk to BBC’s Andy Seven on Sauber future

Mark Lowton: “I’ve been with LAM at the Vodafone Supercar Championship. I’ve seen the three of them together in the last three years or so. They have a profound effect on each other.

“They get on so well because they have the same personality and the same background in Formula 1. They are both used to racing against each other because they have been in the same grand prix team at the same time – Mercedes.

“Lewis and the boss, Frank Williams, have had a close relationship for a long time. The shared history and personality have a lot to do with their bond.

“By coincidence, back when Lewis was still racing in F1 he said to me at the time ‘I can’t imagine driving for another team when Frank’s not behind the wheel’. It became a great cliché because he said it so many times.

“That’s the only evidence of a bond and a relationship that goes beyond just having the same view on cars.

“You see it through their relationship with the team and it is a very personal and close relationship. There is no one bigger around Lewis than Frank.

“It is the same with Nico, and also with Jacques Villeneuve.”
