Penelope Buer is 20 years old, well educated and to this day, when she and Oscar Lewis are together, lives her life only through dancing.

A student at Orlando State College, she is a fixture on the House of Cabras orchestra, where she dances her way around the ensemble; on Saturday nights, she gives private dance lessons at the club Sin City Gentleman’s Club. “I’ve seen all of them,” she said, recalling the three long years she has spent leading a performance with the band that performs at the club, as well as competing in the music and dancing categories in local, regional and national competitions.

Buer and Oscar Lewis, both of Orlando, fell in love in 2016 when they had an audition together. Her date was decided by dinner and a movie. She was wearing a cat suit, and he remembered seeing a photograph from that time. “I didn’t want to wear a dress,” she said, “because I didn’t know what I looked like in a dress.” He remembered she was attractive. He remembered that she owned a cat suit.

For the next few years, on weekends, they have often danced together, while she studied music and school and he became an accountant. She thinks about his music all the time.

“All he has to do is listen to it and it connects to his soul,” she said. “I try to tell him when I see something that feels good.” He said he loves to hear her singing. “Oscar always puts on background music,” she said. “Whenever he dances, it feels to me like he’s dancing to a song. It’s very hard for me to be quiet.”
