Why Austin Butler cries every time he sees one Elvis Presley performance

The singer is as familiar as his name, as familiar as his songs and as familiar as his body of work, but what is it that makes Austin Butler think of Elvis Presley so much?

“He has the best body,” Butler told me. He’s 5’9” and at least 120 lbs, in a white T-shirt and jeans. Butler (who didn’t want his full first name used) lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and their four children.

To get to the point, the singer told me they had seen Presley perform twice: once at a high school in his hometown of Dallas, around 1973, and then again at an outdoor concert in the Texas Hill Country about five years later.

It was the summer of 1975, Butler said, and “I went with about 200,000 other young people from all over the world. I saw him from the front row. It’s like if you saw it in a movie. We all got on the bus and sat down in the back. He started singing right then, in full drag, and no one knew how to sing like him, and he is still the greatest.”
